Raes on Wategos – Byron Bay, NSW, Australia

Where Beach Vibes Meet Luxury, Privacy and Coastal Charm

In much need of a break and a disconnect from Sydney, I decided that a trip up the New South Wales coast of Australia, would be the perfect escape. A one hour flight to Ballina and a 30 minute drive to Raes at Wategos in the property’s 4 wheel drive Lexus was not stressful and easy. The passenger seats, offering a choice of massage options (no, I wasn’t hallucinating), hinted that this would be no ordinary getaway. The tone was being set for a perfect blend of understated luxury with a relaxed beach vibe.

This was my third visit to Raes since it opened its doors 30 years ago and although Watego Beach has become busier over time, it still feels like a hidden gem — discreet, luxurious and private. Located in one of Australia’s most desirable beach destinations, Raes on Wategos is the perfect escape.

Raes is tucked away in an exclusive enclave along the Cape Byron Walking Track, known to wellness-loving locals as the lighthouse walk, a daily ritual for many. The property is close enough to Byron Bay’s town centre for convenience, yet far enough away to feel wonderfully removed. Just 100 steps from the front door will bring you to the sandy shores of Wategos Beach.

Main Beach, Clarkes Beach, Belongil Beach and Byron’s shops, bars and restaurants are a short 30 minute walk or a five minute drive away.

Guest Lobby

The addition of the Raes Guesthouse in November 2024 has taken this already stunning property to new heights. Staying here feels like being at a best friend’s beautiful home, complete with freshly prepared meals and thoughtful touches like a calming pot of tea waiting for you when you return from dinner. The 11 rooms and suites are surrounded by tropical gardens, two lap pools, a cozy fireplace and a private terrace that urges you to relax, breathe deeply and enjoy.

Guesthouses

Raes’ Mediterranean inspired design, with its coastal influences, shines through in the spacious suites, featuring king-sized beds, custom locally crafted bedheads, French linen canopies, Belgian linen upholstery and penny tiles in the bathrooms that create a playful yet sophisticated ambiance. After a major renovation six years ago, Sydney-based interior designer Tamsin Johnson embraced a chic coastal aesthetic. Think soft natural tones, rattan furniture and mosaic tiles, plus bifold windows and timber shutters to make the most of the sea breeze. The recent addition of the Guesthouse is a seamless continuation of Raes’ signature style, blending elegance with comfort.

Suite No. 14

The original travertine tiles, archways and columns have been carefully restored to preserve the building’s historical charm, while contemporary comforts have been thoughtfully introduced. This delicate balance enhances the overall experience, creating a space that embraces sophisticated seaside living.

Dining at Raes – A Culinary Journey

One of the highlights of my stay was undoubtedly the dining experience. Whether it was the private dining at the Guesthouse or the acclaimed Raes Dining Room, a prestigious two-hatted restaurant in the original Raes hotel, I was in awe of the flavours and creativity. Executive Chef Jason Saxby, a culinary genius who has worked at The Ledbury in London and Sydney’s award winning Quay, has created a modern Australian-Mediterranean menu that showcases local, sustainably sourced produce and native ingredients.

Each dish was a masterpiece, but some of my favourites included the Spanner Crab & Squid Ink Agnolotti, Market Fish with Stuffed Zucchini Flower Glazed in Bush Lemon and the crispiest, creamiest Mille Feuille I’ve ever tasted. Paired with a glass (okay, maybe two) of Santorini Argyros Assyrtiko white wine, every bite was pure perfection.

After dinner, we had the pleasure of speaking with Chef Jason, who passionately shared his approach to sourcing produce and collaborating with regional farmers and producers. It was an unexpected and enriching experience that deepened my appreciation for the culinary delights on offer.

The Spa Experience

Raes’ spa experience was the ultimate indulgence. A two hour body and face treatment with Nicole left me feeling completely rejuvenated and pampered. I highly recommend the complimentary infrared sauna session, it’s unlike any I’ve tried before, with personalised music, lighting and temperature settings to suit your mood. The spa exclusively uses products from the world renowned Rationale brand, ensuring a top tier treatment experience.

What I Love About Raes on Wategos:

  • The Location – Overlooking the pristine waters of Wategos Beach, with leisurely walks to the Lighthouse or Main Beach at Byron Bay.
  • The Aesthetic – Tamsin Johnson’s refined yet relaxed design flows seamlessly between the Hotel and the Guesthouse. I loved getting lost in the maze of arched hallways, nooks and crannies, each one more inviting than the last.
  • The Elegant Touches – The spiral staircases in the Guesthouse made me want to wear flowing linen and silk, they were just that enchanting.
  • The Complimentary Lexus Transport – With an in-house chauffeur for arrivals, departures and local excursions, everything is effortlessly seamless.
  • The Thoughtful Touches – A chilled bottle of Perrier-Jouët champagne waiting for me in the suite, the perfect pre-dinner treat on the private terrace.
  • The Food – Every dish I tried was outstanding, nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you, Chef Jason and team, for the unforgettable culinary experience.
  • The Staff – What truly sets Raes apart is the exceptional service. Every member of the team delivered high quality, personalised care, ensuring my stay was memorable.
